01
Scope and who we are
This Privacy Policy applies to the GitShorts website and GitShorts mobile applications. GitShorts provides a curated, swipeable feed of open-source repository stories, limited guest reading, account access for continued reading, engagement features, and push notifications.
GitShorts is responsible for the handling described here. Privacy questions and requests can be sent to hello@gitshorts.com.
02
Information we collect
Account data: your email address and the information needed to keep you signed in when you create an account to continue beyond guest access.
Activity data: stories you view, save, like, share, or open; feed progress; and limited search activity such as whether results were returned. We do not record the words you search.
Notification data: your notification choice and the information needed to deliver and open notifications when you enable them. If notifications are off, the app may keep the last reminder time on your device.
Service and safety data: basic device, browser, network, time, and diagnostic information needed to operate, protect, and troubleshoot GitShorts.
Data on your device: guest bookmarks, feed progress, preferences, and sign-in state may be stored locally on your device or browser.
03
How we use information
Operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve GitShorts.
Provide optional sign-in and sync your saves, likes, and reading progress across devices.
Remember what you have already seen and organize your feed without using sensitive personal characteristics.
Measure general feature use, prevent repeated view counts and abuse, and understand how the service performs.
Send notifications you choose to receive.
Respond to support requests and comply with legal obligations.
04
When information is shared
We do not sell personal information or use it for cross-app targeted advertising.
We use service providers to run functions such as sign-in, storage, hosting, notifications, diagnostics, and security. They may process only the information needed to provide those services and must protect it consistently with this policy and applicable law.
We may disclose information when required by law or when reasonably necessary to protect users, our rights, or the service.
When you choose to open an external source, you leave GitShorts and that source’s own privacy policy applies.
05
Your choices
You may read up to seven distinct stories or spend up to five minutes actively reading as a guest, whichever happens first. You must create or sign in to an account to continue reading after that limit. Notifications remain optional. While notifications are off, GitShorts may show one in-app reminder in any 24-hour period. You can decline or disable notifications, sign out, clear locally stored app or browser data, or request account deletion. Where consent is the basis for processing, you may withdraw it at any time. This does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal.
06
Retention and deletion
We keep personal data only for as long as reasonably needed to provide the service, protect it, resolve support or security issues, and meet legal obligations.
After a verified deletion request, we delete or de-identify your account and associated saves, likes, and account-linked activity, except for limited information we must or are permitted to retain by law. Temporary backup copies may remain until they are safely replaced.
You can remove data kept only on your device by clearing GitShorts app or browser storage or by uninstalling the app.
07
Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards appropriate to a small independent service. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
08
Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing; receive a portable copy; withdraw consent; or complain to a regulator. Email us from the address connected to your account so we can verify the request. Withdrawing consent does not affect earlier lawful processing.
09
Children
GitShorts is not directed to children under 13 or the higher minimum age required where they live. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children below that age. Contact us if you believe a child provided information so we can investigate and delete it.
10
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as GitShorts or the law changes. We will post the revised policy here, update the date above, and provide additional notice when a material change requires it.
